Number the Stars

by
Lois Lowry

Annemarie Johnson is 10 years old when the Nazi's invade Copenhagen, Denmark.  Once the Nazi's start coming for Copenhagen's Jews, Annemarie's family takes in Annemarie's best friend Ellen, while her family goes into hiding elsewhere.  The book mostly tells the story of Annemarie and her family, and their experience living among and resisting the Nazi's. The action of the book comes at the end, when soldiers barge into Annemarie's house and they decide it's time to get Ellen and her family safely to Sweden. Lowry weaves together amazing bits of history with her sympathetic characters to create a convincing and heart-breaking picture of Nazi-occupied Copenhagen and the citizens who formed the resistence.
