Around the World in a Week! (Grades 1-2)
Summer is the perfect time for traveling, even virtual traveling! And "traveling" is the perfect way to keep kids reading and writing over the summer.
In this camp, kids will get to explore geography (including using maps and compasses), folktales, local foods and games, art, history, as we "travel" from North American to the six other continents. The entire week will be set up as an adventure game, as students gather the supplies they need to sail from place to place, gaining more treasures and supplies as they discover new and exciting knowledge about the locations they visit.
Not only will children become deeply familiar with a world map (What are the directions? What is a compass rose? What is a map legend and how do you read it?), but they will take virtual field trips, hear stories, do hands-on art and culture activities, and keep a travel journal, all designed to help them remember unique and interesting facts and stories about locations around the world.
We've built the camp to be a fun and interactive way for children to practicing reading (stories and folktales from each stop on the "tour") and build their reading vocabulary, writing (keeping a travel journal and writing about what they have learned), and basic math (if you need a gallon of water a day when sailing, how much water do you need to sail from North American to Antarctica?). In the process, we hope that they will build foundation for understanding the world. Each day of class will include some art, some local food, and some interesting games and customs from around the world.
This fun class will be an easy way to keep kids practicing academic skills -- particularly English/Language Arts skills-- without feeling like they are in school.
