End Punctuation: Periods, Questions Marks, Exclamation Marks

There are three marks that tell the reader the sentence is over: a period, a question mark, and an exclamation point.

  • Periods

Periods come at the end of statements. A statement is a sentence that tells something. Periods can also come at the end of commands. A command is a sentence that gives an order.

For example:

Statement: Eliana enjoyed the salsa class last Tuesday.

Command: Eliana, sign me up for the next dance class.

  • Question Marks

A question mark goes at the end of a direct question or a sentence that ends in questions. A question is a sentence that asks something.

For example:

Direct question: Will you be my partner for the ballroom dancing class?

Multiple questions: You knew I’d ask you, didn’t you?

  • Exclamation Points

An exclamation is a sentence that shows strong feeling. Exclamation points are used at the end of exclamation sentences.

Exclamation: That dance class was so much fun!
