Improper Comparisons Practice AK
Find the objects that are being compared. Underline them and make sure that comparable items are being compared. If not, there may be a word or phrase missing.
Level 1
- She finds it easier to learn to dance than cooking. Should be "learn to cook."
- Grandma likes fruits from the farmers market more than the grocery store. Should be "fruits from the grocery store."
- Pediatricians argue that toddlers should spend more time reading books than toys. Should be "playing with toys."
- Sprint's phone plan is more extensive than AT&T. Should be "AT&T's" or "AT&T's plan."
- My crazy sister likes food from Panda Express more than Chinatown. Should be "food from Chinatown."
- Staff members at the university have better benefits than Macy's. Should be "staff members at Macy's."
- Voters seem to appreciate candidates who are dramatic and loud more than honest. Should be "candidates who are honest."
- I prefer books about history more than science. Should be "books about science."
Level 2
- The items being compared are “the competing contractor’s maintenance agreement” and “the current contractor.” These items are not comparable. Change the second term to “the current contractor’s maintenance agreement.”
- The items being compared are “The flowers that Jane and Jonathon ordered” and “Carr’s Flower Shop.” These items are not comparable. Change the second term to “flowers from Carr’s Flower Shop.”
- The items being compared are “many nineteenth century American artists” and “earlier times.” These items are not comparable. Change the second term to “artists from earlier times.”
- The items being compared are “the industrial use of plastics” and “steel, aluminum, and copper combined.” These items are not comparable. Change the second term to “industrial uses of steel, aluminum, and copper combined.”
