Parallelism Practice AK
Circle the launch phrase and underline the beginning of each item in the list that follows. Are these items parallel? If not, fix them!
- The launch phrase is "Joh needed to" and the list is "study for her Shakespeare test," "write a history essay," and "had geometry proofs to work through." Change the last to "work through geometry proofs" to make it parallel.
- The launch phrase is "same Thanksgiving feast:" and the list is "her famous sweet potato casserole," "buttery green beans," and "she cooks the most succulent turkey in the world." Drop "she cooks" to make it parallel.
- The launch phrase is "Good students" and the list is "study hard," "read thoroughly," and "practice relentlessly." This is parallel.
- The launch phrase is "will include" and the list is "a fantastic parade," "fun raffles and games," and "will even have a crab buffet." Drop "will even have" to make it parallel. A sentence can add "even" to a final item and still be parallel, but this sentence has extra verbs.
- The launch phrase is "have found remain of" and the list is "giant sloths," "dire wolves," and "bones from wooly mammoths." Because bones and remains are basically the same, take out bones from the last item to make it parallel.
- The launch phrase is "has no professional football team, but" and the list is "is loyal to the Dodgers," "loves the Kings," and "the Championship winning Lakers." In this case, everything in the list begins with a verb, so the last item needs a verb too: "adores the Championship winning Lakers" would work.
- The launch phrase is "we can take a ride up to" and the list is "play in the snow," "do some sledding," and "learn to ski." This list is parallel.
- The launch phrase is “the animals” and the list is “guide,” “assist,” and “generally they take care…” Change the last term to “take care of …” to make it parallel.
- The launch phrase is “with” and the list is “a piano,” “bath fixtures of silver,” and “there were draperies…” Change the last term to “draperies trimmed with Brussels lace” to make it parallel.
- The launch phrase is “recycling center is” and the list is “accessible to the public,” “responsive to community needs,” and “complies with current…” The words “accessible” and “responsive” are adjectives while “complies” is a verb. Change the last term to “compliant with current…” to make it parallel.
