Parallelism Test Prep AK

  1. C. Everything in the list of the cat's annoying behaviors should be parallel.  The jumping off point is "annoying; she..." and everything that follows is a verb: "begged," "slept," "snored," except the last item which includes an unneeded "she" before getting to the action.
  2. C. Everything in the list of the father's daily activities should be parallel.  The jumping off point is "hardworking father" and everything that follows starts with a present tense verb: "drives," "operates," "restocks," until "drove" which is past tense.
  3. D. The list in this sentence is the travel agency's advice.  The two parallel items in the list use the form "to be" so the other item must use the form "to be" as well.  "Not being alone at not" should be "not to be alone at night" in order to be parallel.
  4. B. All of the other pairings in this list begin with one person doing something to or with another.  This item has two people as the subject which would be ok on its own, but is not parallel in this sentence.
  5. C. In this case, all of the love symptoms are in the format "the adjective noun" except for C, which is a progressive verb.  To be parallel, it should be "the constant thoughts about him."
  6. E. This sentence begins with a list of novels and some descriptions about them.  In the case of 1984 and Brave New World, the have the structure "negative aspect of novel."  But the structure is flipped for Fahrenheit 451, which uses a possessive instead.  The structure of each item should be the same.
  7. A. Correct as is.
  8. B. The cloud-based human resource solutions do many things.  In this sentence the structure of those things is "active verb details."  Then, on the last item, the structure switches to "adjective passive verb details."  The correct (and cleanest) answer is B, which maintains the "active verb details" structure after the "but."
  9. D. This one is a little tricky.  The list is the list requirements for the satellite panel configuration.  Bear in mind that "configuration" is singular, so it must go with singular pronouns (ruling out answer E).  The jumping off point for the list is "so that it..." and the items that follow mostly start with past tense active verbs: "received," "functioned."  The outlier is "was keeping," which should be "kept."
  10. C. The list is at the beginning of this sentence.  The jumping off point is "The appearance of..." and the items in the list are all in the structure "adjective noun" except for "when plaster starts to crumble."  To be parallel, this should be "crumbling plaster."
