Mr. George Baker

by
Amy Hest

Mr. George Baker and Harry don’t seem like they would be friends. George is an African American, one-hundred year old man and Harry is a young boy who lives next door. Harry frequently spends time with George. He is fascinated by George’s clothing style, and is also very impressed with his ability to play the drums. However, George never learned how to read, and Harry is currently learning how to. Thus, we understand the nature of their friendship; they attend school together in an effort to try to learn how to read. Harry and George, despite the massive age difference, actually have a lot in common and have a powerful friendship.
