Convert Fractions and Decimals to Percents

It's very simple to convert a decimal to a percent (and if you start with a fraction, first convert it to a decimal, and then you can convert it to a percent!)

  1. Convert your fraction to a decimal (if necessary) by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
  2. Multiply decimal by 100 to turn it into a percent.

$$\eqalign{\dfrac{17}{20}&= && \text{Turn fraction into division problem}\\ 17 \div 20 &=.85 &&\text{Divide for decimal}\\ .85 \times 100 &= 85\text{%} &&\text{Multiply decimal by 100 for the percent answer}}$$

Shortcut: The short cut way of multiplying by 100 is to move the decimal move two spaces to the right (think about it, if you multiply something by 100, you add two zeros, which is the same as moving the decimal point two spaces to the right).
