# One-Step Equations: Addition and Subtraction

Common Core Grade Level:
Packet includes:
42 practice problems and an answer key.

This packet helps students practice how to solve one-step equations with addition and subtraction. These equations are all simple equations, requiring only basic addition and subtraction, which help students practice working with variables and balancing equations.

Each page starts with easier problems that get more difficult as students work through the packet. After doing all 42 problems, students should be more comfortable doing these problems and have a clear understanding of how to solve them.

Sample Problem(s):

Solve for x.

Simple: $x-9= 5$

Advanced: $x+-38=-59$

Notes:

Practice problems require knowledge of how to add and subtract integers.  One of the most common problems students have when first learning algebra is learning to deal with positive and negative numbers correctly.  Although many schools start teaching basic equations in elementary school, these practice problems may not be appropriate for 4th and 5th graders because most 4th and 5th graders have not yet learned how to work with negative numbers.
