WritingBoost! (Essay Writing) CLASS FULL
Writing is an essential life skill -- and in order to write well, we need instruction, practice, and feedback.
WritingBoost! is a week-long day camp that focuses on various types of essay writing as well as vocabulary, grammar, usage, and style.
The first four days of camp will focus on four different types of essays: a show-not-tell descriptive essay, an expository "how-to" essay, a persuasive essay, and a personal essay (like the kinds students write for college applications).
Each day students will learn about a new type of writing, learn about and practice a new grammar or usage rule, and learn 20 new vocabulary words (practiced through our "Vocabulary Battles" game). Students will also "workshop" their writing with the class. The class will learn the rules and etiquette of writing workshops and then read their works aloud before discussing their writing with other members of the class.
The final day of camp will focus on finalizing one piece of writing: incorporating workshop ideas and suggestions, improving grammar and style, and generally polishing one final draft essay that will be formally presented to the class (and any parents who are available for the last hour of camp).
WritingBoost students are pre-tested and post-tested on writing knowledge, skills, and vocabulary. WritingBoost is one of our most popular summer camps -- focusing on a critical skill that every student needs to be successful in middle school, high school, and beyond -- and every student who has taken the course has posted a significant improvement in writing skills and vocabulary. Plus, every student leaves the class knowing that they can write something wonderful.
