Around the World & Letter Writing!
Summer is the perfect time for traveling, even virtual traveling! And "traveling" is the perfect way to keep kids reading and writing over the summer.
In this camp, kids will get to explore geography (including using maps and compasses), folktales, local foods and games, art, history, as we "travel" from North American to the six other continents.
Not only will children become deeply familiar with a world map (What are the directions? What is a compass rose? What is a map legend and how do you read it?), but they will read stories, do hands-on art and culture activities, and keep a travel journal, all designed to help them remember unique and interesting facts and stories about locations around the world. Each day of class will include some art, some local food, and some interesting games and customs from around the world.
We'll also be asking the students to write letters: to each other (as part of letter writing games and activities), to family members, to local businesses and elected officials. We'll talk about issues and think about who they could write to in order to make improvements (their school principals? our congresspeople?). Because email is such a critical part of correspondence these days, we'll also spend some time each day teaching and practicing the basics of touch typing. Students will all get their own Typing.com account, so that they can continue to practice after the camp ends.
This fun class will be an easy way to keep kids practicing academic skills -- particularly English/Language Arts skills-- without feeling like they are in school.
